Articles from September, 2011

It’s that time again, in case you haven’t noticed yet we try to get this blog post out every Monday although we usually put it out a day early before we advertise it on facebook to see how many people read it before we advertise it. Also, for those of you who have any ideas what those icons are at the bottom of this and our other blog post, (the DIGG, STUMBLEUPON, ect) feel free to post our article on there, or explain what those are about if you have the time.

This week were not focusing on any one shoot in particular, as we have had so many it would be hard to pick, being busy is great but it sure does mean a lot of time in front of the computer editing! Also, we have been reminding you ladies that the holiday season is coming up fast, and we get many requests for boudoir sessions for holiday gifts. Many ladies choose to have an album or book made, which we do all for you, you can be involved in the design process, or you can leave it entirely up to us, whichever is more convenient for you. It takes time for the books to be made though so that is why we are encouraging you all to get in as early as possible. You can book an appoint here on our website, and we take session prepayment through PayPal.

Another new policy we want to put out is our decision to not give out the high resolution disk. We knew this wasnt going to be a popular decision with our clients and it has been a challenge to implement, but in the interest of moving away from the more beginning or amateurish practices its something we had to do. It really doesnt make sense to have your picture taken with great equipment then for us to color correct and edit for hours on end just for our clients to go get a 35 cent print from Wal-Mart. We have read many articles condemning the practice of giving out the high resolution disk their are many articles out there in the same vein, one only has to google something like, “why is professional photography expensive” to see the many relevant articles out there. It seems the more we study, grow and learn in this field the more we find out things we could have been doing better! Anyway, i’m off the soapbox, here are some of the highlights from this week, let us know what you want to see more of!

As you can see we have got some new blog frames, from over at The Album cafe. Now I am still trying to figure them out, and I about drove myself crazy trying to get them sized correctly although the purchase came with 20 different frames it makes the pictures way to small, but overall i’m satisfied with the purchase. Special thanks to Christine over at Wootness for recommending them! While were on the subject if your interested in photography make sure to check out the Wootness page!

Here is a preview of the second shoot I did with “V”, she kept mentioning this violin she had and after seeing it I knew the shoot was going to be awesome! For those that missed the first shoot I did with her you can check it out here.

We also had the pleasure of having one of our favorite people back in the studio, the one and only Agent “M”! In case your new to the studio Agent “M” is one of the most popular with our viewers, and has been gracing us with her presence for about 3 years. We hadn’t seen her in quite awhile, but we asked her to come in to discuss an upcoming shoot project we had in mind, to which she is going to be the star. This project is going to be one of our most ambitious ones to date, involving shooting on location with Agent “M” and three or four other models, we are still in the research phase of the project but stay tuned because its going to blow your mind! Here are a few shots we took of her at the meeting:

These are the series of shots that have been generating so much conversation between my wife and I recently. We had been planning this shoot for months, but the more we planned, the more concerned we became over the controversial subject matter. We would literally have conversations lasting hours about it.  We personally love them, but we were very concerned they may frighten away potential customers, or cause our existing customers concern especially here in Whidbey Island were their seems to be such a  conservative population.  From the beginning we here at Oni Studio have built a reputation on being different and edgy, we believe there is a market for it since most photographers choose to deal in more traditional subject matters, not that we think that is a bad thing, we know of many photographers in the Oak Harbor area that are very talented, we just choose to deal in the more esoteric areas.  Whichever way it ends up playing out, its an honor to work with Agent “H”. The girl is a true professional and puts an extreme amount of thought, passion, and pure emotion into her shoots. She is a shining example of what happens when a client puts just as much effort into a shoot that we put into it and we think the pictures below express that! Anyway, we would love to hear your thoughts on the issue. We want to know what you think, are the shots in good taste, do they discourage you from shooting with us, ect.  Anyway, that’s all the time we have for this week, we here at Oni Studio have some very large projects on the horizon and some new changes coming up so stay tuned!

On September 10, 2011 we were honored to photograph a wedding of David Hamilton and Charity Laferriere.  It was a sunny warm day and the wedding ceremony and reception were held at the Rocky Point park area overlooking the ocean. Such a perfect location for two beautiful people to tie the knot.

Best Cupcakes I ever had, Rocky POint, Whidbey Island Wedding

We originally met Charity, the owner and operator of Watchdawgs pet grooming and boarding back in April, when she won a free thirty minute shoot contest. It was such a pleasure working with her! Charity’s attitude and great personality showed beautifully through the camera and her pictures were unforgettable.  When she requested us to be her wedding photographers we were so honored and excited to work with her again.

On that beautiful September day Charity and Dave, surrounded by closest family and friends, became husband and wife.

Here are some of our favorite shots.

This was a very touching and emotional moment, for those in attendance you know why.

Its no surprise to learn where Charity inherited her considerable dance moves from! Her father, despite having received injuries from a motor vehicle accident that would have put me in the hospital toughed it out to not only attend his daughters wedding, but also to perform a dance routine I wouldn’t be able to reproduce on my best day, now that is MOTIVATING!

This was another nice surprise, I didn’t even know you could get personalized matchbooks, very nice touch! I know now that in addition to her other talents if we ever need an event planner i’m calling Charity first thing!

My parents always told me money doesn’t grow on trees, I always believed them too until I went to Charities wedding and discovered the awful truth!

Now no one has ever referred to me as “normal” but I think I have stepped off the deep end with this cupcake wedding cake. I was initially hesitant to try them, but Charities mother assured me that they would be the best thing I have ever put in my mouth, so I decided to put that claim to the test. They were made from scratch hazelnut chocolate and I thought I may have died and went to have the cupcakes of the Gods on Mt Olympus. Ever since then i’ve developed quite the obsession with them, I think about them before going to sleep and have found myself staring at this picture for long periods of time…..wait…what exactly was I typing about again?

Dave and Charity, may the years ahead of you be filled with love and lasting joy.  Congratulations to a couple whose match truly seems to be perfect for each other.

      North End Fitness Center

Written on September 10, 2011 Categories: Whidbey Island Boudoir Shoot

We had shot Jen a few times before, but had always felt as though we had not reached our full potential with her due to equipment and budgetary constraints. With some of our recently acquired equipment, we endeavored to try it again! Jen had membership with a different gym this time and got permission from Yvette, the owner of the North End Fitness Center. Yvette was in the middle of some hefty renovations of their Goldie road location, but graciously agreed to let us bring in all of our equipment for the shoot, for that we want to thank her! Here are a few of our favorite shots:

And now a few words from Jenn herself! She’s pretty fond of her wardrobe, provided by Body By Brazil and we can definitely see why!

The owner of North End also wrote us an email so nice we had to share it, we love getting feedback like this, it makes all the hard work worth it!

“I was really excited when Jennifer and I started talking about North End being a site where the passion of fitness can be represented through photography. Photography can tell a powerful story. What a way to promote not only fitness but the passion and drive someone carries in their heart to reach a specific goal in life. Jennifer’s passion in fitness is accurately exemplified through your recent pictures from your shoot at our facility. The shoot demonstrates passion, determination, a love for fitness as well as a level of attitude that one requires to reach goals in life. Life is full of challenges and when we go after our dreams, there’s no limit to what we can achieve. North End Fitness Center was built on my endless passion and drive for healthy living, community involvement and a friendly/family environment. We feel fortunate to be a part of your beautiful artistic work as well as a great promotion to all out there that it is possible to attain your goals… Thank you very much for including us in your work… I look forward to working with you again!”

        Wyatt at City Beach

Written on September 4, 2011 Categories: Family Photos Whidbey Island

Lately we have been really busy with a variety of shoots. Some of them you read in our blog about and others you have seen on FaceBook. Thanks to all our fans out there for commenting on our posts and for all your encouragement. It is so nice to hear that our work is liked and appreciated!

This time I want to tell you about a location shoot we did for Ashley of her son. Wyatt just turned one and we wanted to incorporate some of the birthday theme in addition to few others. For the location we chose the City Beach area, here in Oak Harbor. It’s the first time I’ve shot there, but liked the versatility of the location a lot. There is a small, well kept park, a baseball field, an old barn, and a playground to name a few. Everything is really close together and was very easy to move from one spot to the next and keeping the little one entertained.

        Just getting set up!

Wyatt was a great little model! Through most of the shoot he stayed happy and smiling… but I did get a chance to get my crying picture!

The family is relocating at the end of the month, so… when no one was looking he got a chance to kiss (and lick) Oak Harbor ground good bye!

Here are some of the few of my favorite shots though so many of them came out great it was a real chore trying to pick out which ones to post!

I would love the opportunity to shoot there again and use the area while everything is nice and blooming, so if you are thinking of booking a family or a child shoot give me a call and we can set it up. Call me at 757-582-2334, or fill out the contact form on our website.

Thanks for reading and tune in next week when we post the Jenn at North End Fitness shoot!
