Her name was Core, and she was on the run.

San Diego wasn’t a place people usually came to when they were on the run. It was too high profile. Especially for a demon hunter. Of course in another life San Diego would have been right up Core’s alley. Maybe thats why she had decided to come here.

After years of being plagued by a demon, Core had turned into one of the greatest hunters of them.  She had killed scores of them. But no matter how hard she tried,  one of them she couldn’t kill. She had a reminder of him every time she looked at her child, it had his eyes. The demon had taken over every aspect of her life. It was hard to remember what life had been like before it came. The demon seemed to encompass her entire being. It had infiltrated her emotions. It had tried to control her every move. Hell, it even knew her bank account number and email password.

In the meantime she had set up shop. Since San Diego was so disgustingly colorful and happy, their was relatively low demonic activity. However she sensed a high level of activity in the Gaslamp area. The gaslamp area was where the majority of douche bags in San Diego spent their free time, and the demons most likely latched on to most of them.

Thats where she was tonight. She had ubered her way to the gaslamp. She stood outside one of the establishments that played sports on TV with hip hop blaring obnoxiously. She didn’t have to wait long for a douche bag to appear.

Ah damn girl you want ride around in ma TRUK?! Yes, this guy was definitely getting the ax. She smiled and touched his chest and walked with him to his unnecessarily large vehicle that got shitty gas mileage.

She dropped her purse. He went to pick it up for her, they always did. She stepped behind and pulled out her weapon. As soon as he raised up she buried it in the side of his head. Oh god, she hoped no blood got on her Gucci, she would just die.

One down, 1,000 to go. She wiped the blood off the weapon. No blood on the Gucci. This was going to be a good night.

The vessel had just left Peru. The wizard stood on the roof looking at the open ocean. He was worried he wouldn’t make it in time. He wouldn’t miss it again this year.

After many weeks the ship finally pulled into port in San Diego. The wizard floated off slowly and landed on the ground. This was still strange to him, especially considering his former life as a neurosurgeon.

His mission was complicated. The gauntlet had almost been reassembled, and once it was not even Living Tribunal would be able to help them.

He found his companion and used the Uber app on his phone for a Spanish driver. No sense in stirring up the crowd. He arrived 15 minutes later. He knew it was too late. Heroes from other universes had already made an appearance. Someone was using the reality gem.

Darth Vader’s storm troopers walked down the street. They were talking about getting cheeseburgers. The sexiest rocket raccoon with vampire teeth stood looking at a map. This was going to be a mess.

The worst thing though? It was hot. Desert hot. Who in the hell had decided to have this in a place like San Diego? The people seemed not to mind the heat and obnoxiously blue sky. Maybe it was just him. He had traveled to the bottom of the world to a place called Kadath in the cold waste, and decided when this was all over he would have to return. This place was not for him.

The lady clown stopped him. She called herself Scarlett Checkers and claimed to be from Philadelphia. He told her that California was going to melt her face make up. She gave him a bowl of bite size Snickers and told him she was late for a Cannibal Corpse concert.

The first way to die. Lack of water. Almost no one had any, and so many people with powers. This place was a powder keg waiting to go off.

The main event was being guarded by the watchers. No matter how strong the wizards magic he could not get inside.

Hot, tired and discouraged, the wizard gave up. He would have to wait until next year to try and get inside the mysterious building.

Recently I had a friend who got interested in photography. I had seen her post some work before, mostly nature and shots of her kids. When Christmas came her husband went out and bought her an entire studio set.

They got right to work and set up the studio and wasted no time in getting a model in for a shoot. They had caught my attention so I always looked at every update they posted. Most of the pics they posted included the studio lighting equipment. Their was so much of it, flashheads, modifiers, syncs, and so on.

The reason my friends new purchases got my attention is because it reminded me of exactly what I did when I first became interested in studio photography. I had no idea what to buy. I had no idea what company was gonna be worth the money. I believe the first set of studio lights I ever had was from a company called Square Perfect. Now square perfect lighting did work for me. However, you could definitely tell it wasn’t the top of the line quality.

Over time, I must have wasted close to a thousand dollars on studio equipment I didn’t need. Finally I got smart and started asking successful photographers what equipment they used. Most of the photographers I wrote to didn’t answer. However one of them finally did. What did they tell me to buy? Alienbees! Now Alienbees arent cheap. But then again they are not ungodly expensive either. Now Alienbees have been around for quite awhile. They have excellent customer service, and they stand by thier products. Also, NO, I dont get any money or any benefits for writing about them. In fact I doubt the company will ever read this entry.

If you’re starting a studio and want a invest your money in studio lighting, Alienbees is one of the best investments you can make.  Now its not the only good photo equipment company out there. Personally i’m not a huge fan of the light stands from Alienbees, and much prefer Manfrotto, Avenger or photoflex brands.

One of these days I really am gonna get off my ass and write some educational entries on the art of boudoir and studio photography. Trouble is I dont think too many people read what I write.

Abigail had been running. She had taken the spirit molecule from the vagrant. At first she didn’t even know what she had. She could feel it in her bag. It was whispering to her. She could feel it moving. It touched the edge of her consciousness.  Was this real? At the very heart of it, she could feel a presence. She could hear his voice, faint. She could see his image in her dreams, dark, his face full of needles. It couldn’t be real.

For as long as she could remember she had been searching. Mystic experiences, LSD, DMT, and the spirit. It was never enough.

She never stopped moving. Never stopped searching. A brothel in New Orleans, BDSM in Berlin. Sometimes when she woke up she didn’t know what city she was in.

Is this all there was? Had she reached the limits of experience? Their had to be more.

She tried Wicca. The goddess rejected her. She tried Buddhism, but nirvana eluded her. What else was there? Their had to be something. Another guy bought her a drink. Where was she again? She thought hard. Her last clear memory was an alley in Paris. This didn’t smell like Paris. Was this Morocco? She had hit bottom.

She had heard of the vagrant. They said when nothing was left he would come. You couldn’t find him, he had to find you. She could feel him now. She finished her drink and stepped outside. She saw him outside the Pyramid Gallery. Their eyes locked. She approached. He took out a box, designs seems to melt and form. She couldn’t take her eyes off it.

She walked away, forgetting about the vagrant. He stared after her with empty eyes. His job was finished. Back in her room she sat down. Fingers tracing patterns. She could feel something traveling. Getting closer. Movement from the mirror. He had came. The light reflected from the pins in his face. She smiled. No more running, no more moving. She had come home.

For as long as I can remember I’ve had a thing with vampires. I think my first vampire film was “Lost Boys” and to this day it’s still one of my favorites.

I think the vampire genre took a huge hit with Interview with a Vampire. Just when I thought things couldn’t get any worse Twilight turned one of my childhood heroes into a sparkling atrocity more geared for female fifth graders than a serious lurking horror for all of humanity.

Why am I talking about vampires?

Because the star of this entry, Chary, was the embodiment of the perfect vampire. She was old world, poised and strangely, had one of the most alluring mysterious scents about her. She was like an other worldly ethereal creature. At the risk of making myself seem creepy, I could smell her two hours after she left. I have no other way to describe the experience other than wonderful!

I woke up one early Sunday morning and saw a post on my Facebook newsfeed from fellow photographer Neil Van Niekerk who had written his own entry on a Boudoir photographer by the name of Petra Herrmann.

Petra recently was diagnosed with breast cancer.  Neil was showcasing her photography not only to promote her, but to let people know about the gofundme campaign. Which would help her with her medical bills.

The entry itself highlighted five of the top selling images Petra takes and how to take your own.

I decided to take Petra up on this challenge and put an ad out on Facebook.

If you click on the link to Petra’s work you’ll be able to compare and contrast the images Chary and I shot.

Now I usually work exclusively with Alienbee strobes and Photoflex modifiers. This was one of the few shoots I’ve done in a long time that relied on natural light.

Physics. How did I come up with the title for this? Well the models name is Elena, and she isn’t a physics professor.

For some odd reason while I was shooting her I was fixated on just how Dark Energy was increasing the expansion of the universe.

I think its become an unhealthy obsession. But then again, once you learn the fate of the universe is to eventually die in a big freeze it would tend to weigh heavily on any sane individual.

On to more mundane conversation. Elena was the first major shoot i’ve had since returning to San Diego. I’ve had an extended business trip down in South America.

I wasn’t just in South America. Ever heard of Mississippi? Yes, I was there as well. Whatever you do, stay out of that place!

I actually have to be fair. Mississippi had one saving grace. A place called Canes. Best fried chicken I think I’ve ever ate. Just to illustrate how good it was, I don’t even eat fried chicken!

Back to Elena. She was super nice, and she even brought along a helpful assistant who tried to keep her focused on the shoot. As you can see we failed. 

I didn’t have a plan for the lighting on this shoot. I hadn’t had a shoot in six months and just decided to wing it.

I decided to bring out my alienbees. I did much of the shoot using a beauty dish as the key light.

Fortunately Elena saved the shoot with her immaculate posing!

Enter Stormie Psy. How did I meet her? Model Mayhem I believe. Stormie is one of my favorite type of models, and people.

What makes her so special? Well she’s into the darker side of life. She exudes dark energy, and loves metal. Most importantly, hates Marilyn Monroe. Since I too hate Marilyn Monroe I knew we were gonna get along famously.

Before you get to impressed though, Stormie admits she in no way finds Dave Mustaine from Megadeth presently attractive. However, she did admit that back in the 80’s she would have had his love child.

So what else can I say about Stormie? Unfortunately not much. Well not much that I can divulge if I want to be alive.

True, she told me some earth shattering secrets about herself. Is she really employed with the CIA? Was she involved with the Kennedy assassination? Does she endorse Charmin brand toilet paper? Unfortunately my lips are sealed on these and other matters.

So here’s the unclassified info on Stormie.  She was born in a small town in Upstate New York. Her parents were Portuguese and Italian. After a brief hitch in the French foreign legion she moved out to California. California is rough even for the toughest people, and Stormie had a hard time adjusting. She became a homeless drifter for awhile before being discovered by Anton Lavey, then head of the Church of Satan.

The Church of Satan trained her in silent killing techniques and deployed her to South America to take out christian missionaries. She was one of the most successful operators in the churches history.

I don’t know if I should have divulged that last part.

On a serious note, if you are a photographer in the southern California area you need to shoot with Stormie. She’s comfortable in her own skin, funny, and knows how to work her curves in an extremely tantalizing way. Every pose she does is a winner, and I had a very tough time picking out images for this blog. She can be contacted through her website or facebook, both of which are linked in this article.

Its thanksgiving day as I write this.  My house is a wreck and a girl has told me that I suck and she doesn’t want to see me ever again. For some reason I start having cruddy luck around the holidays. However bad luck does have a couple of benefits. It gets me in a serious introspective mood to examine what exactly i’m doing right and wrong.

So what exactly am I doing right? Well I thought about it and I think i’ve finally got the knack of not setting the fire alarm off when I cook.

So what else? Well I guess i’ll have to take some advice from Bill Burr. Lie to myself about getting a six pack, go on OkCupid and meet boring women who i’ll pretend to have something in common with.

Have you had enough with my whining and complaining? Ok good, because i’d like to discuss this semi nude shoot I did. When I see nude work done by photographers i’m not really a fan. They either have the models splayed out like some hustler model or the model looks like she’s about to be executed.

Our model for this entry is Vón Feréve, and yes you’ve seen her on Oni Studio before.  She is an awesome model, shows up on time and requires very little direction. that last part is my favorite as I like to focus on the technical aspects of the shoot. So how do you go from regular portraits to steamy nude images without coming off as a pervo?

Truth is I have no idea. However I do have a couple of principles I shoot by. First, don’t come across as to eager to shoot nude. When I contact a model for a shoot I don’t immediately ask for it. Put yourself in the models shoes. They probably get multiple request for nude photography a day. Try and set yourself apart.

Finally, make sure you dump all the bodies and clean up before they arrive. No one likes taking their clothes off in a dirty house, so get your shit together.

The truth is that I have writers block like you wouldn’t believe. Usually I sit in front of the computer, clear my mind and a story appears. It doesn’t seem to be working today. Ok…clear my mind..type the first things you think about: Sepultura, Brazil, Laxatives, lesbians. I really don’t see this working today.

I guess i’ll just have to let the images speak for themselves. Von is my favorite model when it comes to all the props I have. I always search through my huge collection of weird shit and get it into her hands.  I used to get yelled at for using props. Looking back I can understand why. I had this collection of horror dolls and used to have the models hold them along with a bottle of mustard. Having trouble understanding? Don’t worry i’ve had enough Vodka and pickles to kill an entire elementary school.

There comes a time, thief, when the jewels cease to sparkle, when the gold loses its luster, when the throne room becomes a prison, and all that is left is to watch Conan until you have memorized the entire script.

Ever heard of Rockabilly? If you haven’t let me explain. Rockabilly is a form of demonic possession. This is the story of Michele, the rockabilly glamour girl.

Michele called me from her phone. She said they were after her and had no place to go. I went down to get her. I had no idea what she was talking about and had never met her in person. I showed her where to park and she quickly got out and grabbed her suitcase. “lets go, they’ll find me if I stay here to long.” We quickly got in the elevator and on up to my apartment.

We got inside and she sat down and began to cry. “um lady, what is wrong with you?”  Turns out none of this really happened. I was just imagining it all, and I really need to lay off the meds. Michele is really a model I met from Model Mayhem, and not a fugitive running from a homicidal cult. Still, I reserve the right to change my view of reality. Michele surprised me right off the bat by stating her ethnicity was Native American. Since I never get the opportunity to meet many Native Americans I was obviously delighted.

Her great grandmother, who was a cherokee, was presented as a gift to the Hopi tribe. Judging by Micheles appearance I would say someone from the Hopi’s was very happy that day! After she finally got her lipstick on we were ready to shoot. Turns out Michele loves to sing and perform in front of the camera. Damnit Michele I am trying to get some sexy images here, this isnt broadway!

Why was Michele singing and throwing shoes out my window at old ladies? “Well I used to be the lead singer in a band” No shit? It was called The Skamakazis, and I have no idea if I spelled that right. She described them as an “Old No Doubt”.  Personally i’d like nothing better than publicly beheading Gwen Stefani. So I pretended she said she was the lead singer of Dimmu Borgir. Awesome, Michele is the lead singer of Dimmu Borgir, and is also an astronaut!

So what does Michele do when she’s not being a sexy model and singer? She says one of her biggest passions in life is cooking and Cadillacs. Michele was in culinary school but opted to go the more direct route and seek her fortune in the work force.  She went on to describe in great detail the cocktail parties with all this fancy food and drinks she would make. “I am the happiest when i’m serving drinks and hors d’oeuvres” said Michele as she threw yet another one of my shoes down on an unsuspecting old lady.

Michele then started talking about Cadillacs. On Sunday mornings she goes to the mall and starts to roll about on the hoods of unoccupied Cadillacs. When the owner returns she hisses at them like a cat then runs off to find another. “My dad was a mechanic you see, and I think that fueled my fascination with cars and car shows in general” said Michele as she drank her coffee and scanned the parking lot. Michele please don’t go lounging on my neighbors car! On a side note, if you ladies like Micheles dress you can get your own here in San Diego at Temptress Fashion!

When it was all said and done I had a phenomenal shoot with Michele. I lost quite a few shoes but gained a cool new shoot buddy. She put on her headphones with the Horrorpops blasting and was out the door.

I don’t know what fuels my obsession with horror movies. For as long as I can remember my heroes were Freddy Krueger, Jason Vorhees, Michael Myers, and Pinhead.

Another thing near and dear to my heart is zombies. I don’t remember the first one I ever saw, but I think it was “Day of the Dead” directed by George Romero. For those of you that don’t know, George Romero is one of the most popular zombie movie directors, and produced the unholy trilogy. Night of the living dead, Dawn of the Dead, and Day of the dead.

I remember the zombie movies scared the dogshit out of me. They also started a lifelong obsession with collecting survival gear, which is awesome at collecting dust and emptying my wallet.

It was interesting how I found out that this zombiewalk in San Diego was even happening. Before I came to San Diego I started doing research on how to keep myself busy.

During one of these searches I found a website called Meetup. Basically this site just gets people together who have a common interest. I think this site is one of the coolest things I have ran across in quite a while, mainly due to its diversity. Do you like collecting thumbtacks, participating in orgies, or enjoy learning to knit? Well Meetup is the place to go; it’s almost guaranteed that you’ll find a group that shares your common interest!

In my case I found a group called the Pacific Photographic Society (PPS), and if you are in the San Diego area and like photography I suggest you look them up.

In fact the PPS was how I found out about the zombie shoot in the first place. When you join the group they have organized shoots to all kinds of events.

When I met them everyone was very welcoming and nice. One of the members even took the time to fix my camera flash. I had a great time shooting with them and can’t wait to go back to another shoot.

The evening went on and I continued to shoot. I saw some of the strangest sites, activities and people I’ve ever seen since coming to this planet 34 years ago.

It was my plan to wonder downtown and maybe have a few drinks, and try and find a metal bar, fetish or industrial club. However most of the drinking establishments just turned out to be sports bars that exuded douchebaggery at about 25 feet.

After walking a bit I saw a line comprised of people dressed in black, tattoos poking out everywhere, sullen faces. I think I may have found my hangout for the next three years. I asked the guy what the line was for, and he replied that it was the Evil Dead Bluray release party. Boom!! I’m in!

After standing in line for over an hour, basically starving, we finally get let in. However there is one catch, we had to hashtag the evil dead on facebook or twitter. They verified the hashtag at the door by looking at our cell phones, and then let us inside. The club where this Evil Dead release party was happening was called “The Commons”. Once inside their was a guy singing, who turned out to be Corey Taylor, who was the lead singer of Slipknot. I never liked Slipknot though so I kept moving. In the other end of the club though, I see the girl from the new Evil Dead film. Which girl? Um hello!! The one who split her tongue in half and then laid a sexy lesbian tongue kiss on the other girl, that’s who!! I don’t stand in line to meet her, but I do snap a few pics. Beyond that, the club was extremely over packed and boring, had like 3 girls and 100 guys. I don’t do sausage fest so I exited stage left.

I went to a few bars after, always after that elusive metal or industrial club. Finally someone told me to go to Club Onyx, and that they played decent music. I made my way there, and it was ok, not exactly what I was looking for, and besides I was pretty drunk at the time. At the time it was either 1am, or close to it. The next thing I remember is arriving at my apartment with some girl I don’t know. Seven hours had gone by, and I had no memory of it. Scary. That’s not the end of it, the money was gone out of my wallet, my camera had been taken along with the lens and flash, my iphone, hell even my glasses were gone. When I asked the girl what had happened to my things she said I approached her as I was. So what happened? I’ll probably never know. I had to replace all my equipment though, which sucked a big one. Anyway, if you read this far I appreciate it! This was a long entry but I hope you enjoyed it!
