I call it Double Exposure. A repeat business. A customer that comes back for more.

There are many reason why a woman would want more than just one photo session in her life. Usually it’s to celebrate a milestone, something to remember. I’ve had clients that came back after they lost weight, changed their looks, or changed a boyfriend ; ) . Some come in before, during and after pregnancy. Others, love their experience so much and get so inspired, that they book a session just to pamper themselves.

When Sarah called me up and wanted to make an appointment for a Boudoir Photo shoot I was not at all surprised. What made her experience a bit different from others is that her first session was more than two years ago, when she just turned eighteen. The two shoots could not be more different from one another. Not only did Sarah change and mature, but Oni Studio did as well. Two years brought an unrecognizable change in our quality, knowledge and experience. But enough about us. Let’s let Sarah tell her story.

My first experience at Oni Studio was two years ago, I was eighteen then and very nervous and shy. I was introduced to Victoria when my friend brought me along to her shoot, and instantly after it was done I was ready to book my own.

A good friend of mine told me about this book “Fifty Shades of Grey” by E. L. James. She said it was right up my alley. I checked the book out right away. Wow! Bondage, sex and all the taboo subjects and it’s a #1 seller?!?!? Just goes to show you that sex does sell, and we all have that naughty side that needs to be unleashed once in a while.

After reading just few chapters I got inspired. This is my light interpretation of the story that captured imaginations of so many around the world. Hope you enjoy!

I have been working with Oni Studio for almost 2 years now, and I can’t tell you how many people come in so nervous about their boudoir shoot and leave so happy and confident about themselves. To see that transformation is one of many reasons that I love working with Oni Studio. However, upon meeting so many clients, the most common question I get, besides, “Can you come over and do my makeup every morning?” is “Have you ever done this type of shoot before?”

Up until a few weeks ago, I couldn’t give an opinion based on my own experience, which is totally different than an opinion of one just observing. So after several people telling me I should try it out, my husband leaving for deployment in May and the real root of it… not feeling very confident with myself and how I looked, I gave in. It took me two years to finally strip down to my unmentionables and let Victoria (figuratively) have her way with me.

Yes, I was a little nervous because I’m not a size 2, or a size 12 for that matter, and I’ve got stretch marks galore after pregnancy. Victoria listened to what I liked and didn’t like about myself, and was able to enhance and pull out my inner beauty and what I was wanting to portray in my pictures.They turned out beautiful and my husband couldn’t be happier! So, it’s important for me to say, just be confident in who you are no matter your size or insecurities.You will leave Oni Studios feeling like a whole new person!

As with any skill once you learn the basics you start to build upon them, expand your visions and try new things.  We believe that in business as well as life you have a have variety and always seek to expand and improve in every en devour. =)

After my recent surgery I had a lot of down time to research new photography techniques, and one of the styles I hadn’t tried yet, but thought was very interesting, is bodyscapes. This technique, sometimes referred to as low key lighting, is something I’ve been very enthusiastic about lately and hadn’t explored very much before since I was restricted equipment wise. However, after we splurged a bit at B&H Photo I’ve been delving into this type of photography with a vengeance!

While doing research for this new shooting technique I was contacted by Crystal, who was a prospective client for a wedding shoot (yes I do WEDDINGS!), and during our conversation she mentioned Vantel Pearls, a company she worked for. For those of you who are new readers of our blog, what I do every now and then is highlight a woman owned business, or feature a woman in what would be considered a nontraditional role, to support strong women in our community. During this photo shoot I tried few different lighting set ups using primarily a strip light. I searched through my trusted “Lighting the Nude: Top Photography Professionals Share Their Secrets” book a number of times for reference and inspiration. I definitely need more practice, but for the first try I am pleased with the result.

Around Whidbey Island area there are not that many luxury hotels to choose from. When I select the hotel I look at things like decor and color combinations, space, light and of course accessibility. So whenever I am out I always keep my eyes open for a new location for future photo shoots.

During one of my last trips to Port Townsend, Washington, I visited The Palace Hotel. It’s located on Water Street, which is the main street of downtown area. Hiding among other Victorian style buildings of 19th century, the hotel is easy to pass by, but the moment I walked inside I fell in love with it. Especially after learning more about the history of the hotel I knew for sure this was going to be one of the most popular locations for Lilith’s Lair.

Every room is decorated in Victorian style and since it used to be a brothel, every room is named after the girl that used to serve in it. Each room is different, unique to the girl’s personality and has a lot of antique furniture and decorations. In hallways and common areas guests can find lounge chairs and fainting couches, beautiful paintings and an old working piano.

“There is something about the Palace Hotel that is unlike other old buildings. We hear about these old places of ill repute and imagine the wretched lives of desperate women. But The Palace leaves no residue of creepiness. Instead, I had a sense of friendship, companionship, and respect which surprised me.

On my way out the door, I talked with one of the women who cares for the hotel, and she said she sees ghosts all the time (she said I reminded her of one of them!). She said she was at first struck by how regal the spirits seemed, the girls seemed to exude a radiant love which one wouldn’t expect from a lowly prostitute. It felt, to me, that within the walls of The Palace, men and women found refuge from the hardships and judgements of society… if those walls could talk…” ~Aliza Finley

The Palace Hotel – A Step Back in Time

“When I walked through the halls and explored the different rooms, I tried to envision what life would have been like when The Palace was in its prime. Knowing what the hotel had been originally established for, it took me while to accept how profuse and how fast American society and culture has progressed since the brothel was shut down. I found that the experience stimulated senses that only museums and haunted mansions could evoke. Being in a place so lavish with history and so well-preserved deceived me of any change or advancement in the outside world. The website may have photographs of all the rooms and the lobbies, but pictures cannot compensate for the Timequake that knocks you back to the Victorian Era when you walk through that front door. I would highly recommend visiting this place, even if it’s just a walk through. Nothing beats aesthetic satisfaction like The Palace.” ~Alicia Christianson

To introduce and showcase my amazing finding I wanted to do a mega shoot with a variety of models and looks. Hotel’s manager, Gary, was very supportive and accommodating. When I was telling him about all the crazy ideas I had for the location, he was open to it and granted me access to anything I needed. Next I booked my models. Few of the faces you will recognize, since I’ve worked with them before, and others I actually met on the day of the shoot. My idea was to convey that Victorian era feeling in a modern way and all the girls played their part beautifully.

On day one of the shoot Ashley, from MakeUp Your Mind, and I took an early ferry to Port Townsend and hurried to unload all the equipment and prep the sets before the first model arrived. I was so glad to have Ashley there. She did an amazing job on making the girl look flawless, and as always helped me carry lights around and move things out of the way. Thanks Ashley!

That day we did three different shoots, moving from one room to the next, running up and down hotel’s large stairwell… what an exercise! I swear I started the day in heels, but that lasted about an hour. By the end of the day I was shooting barefoot. The whole day was so much fun. My creativity was pumping, especially when I would find a vintage piece of furniture or a cool traveling trunk that I could incorporate into the set.

The rooms were all so individual, and the fact that it used to be a Brothel just made the place all the more intriguing. It fits so perfectly into the town of Port Townsend.” ~Lucy Luck

That night Ashley had to go home, but I actually stayed the night in one of the beautiful rooms, Miss Mona 10B, on the third floor. I relaxed in a claw-foot tub and lounged in my comfortable bed watching TV. And only then did the thought occur to me, “I wonder if this hotel is haunted?”  I didn’t want to freak myself out, so I just locked the door, put a safety chain up and went to bed. I’ll admit, I had some crazy sexual dreams that night and woke up sweating, wondering why I was so hot. However, when I got out from under the blanket, the room was ice cold! I didn’t give it much thought, but when I turned around and looked at the door, I got chills down my spine. The chain was undone and the door was wide open!!!

Now, I am not one of those people that get easily spooked or freak out, but I am careful. I know the deadbolt was engaged before I fell asleep. Something had happened during the night. Was I visited by a ghost?

When I told the staff of the hotel about my experience, they were not at all surprised. They even keep records and letters from people that had a haunted experience while staying at the Palace. I looked through that hefty volume of records. Some letters date as far back as late eighteen hundreds. Wow!

The elegant hotel has been modernized but still boasts many of the historical elements such as claw foot bathtubs. While all are elegant, each room has a different vibe and is named after the woman who once occupied them. I found myself wondering about the lives of the beautiful women who once called this place home and earned their livings servicing male suitors from inside its rooms. Last Saturday Oni Studio was a part of The Ultimate Ladies Night at Element Nightclub. Oh, what fun we had! There were Appetizers and Desserts, Drink Specials, Door Prizes and FREE Gifts! A lot of our passed clients stopped by the table to say hello and talk about the ideas for the new shoots. I’ve also met a lot of girls that confessed thinking about doing a photo shoot, but for one reason or the other talked themselves out of it. I was able to answer many questions and hopefully made the decision easier. Ladies, you all know who you are and I better see you in the studio soon!

I met with Jen at her studio few days after the event to talk about her business and this amazing hair removal technique, sugaring.

Jen had a crazy idea five years ago and decided to open Oak Harbors first studio dedicated to Hair Removal. A licensed cosmetologist, she was trained in the art of Sugaring by Lara at the Sweet Spot in Seattle. Jen opened Sugar Studio in October of 2006. It’s her goal to make every woman comfortable in an otherwise awkward situation, to provide an efficient and quick sugaring, and to empower and awaken confidence in women.

Another project that I have been working on for the last few days is building a new “Vintage Bedroom” set. It took five weeks to get the “Candy Sticks” wallpaper in from Backdrop Outlet and I thought the project would go smoothly after that, but the hard work had just begun! Thanks to my wonderful friends that came in on their day off and helped me finish the set in time. The very next day I had a model in to try it out. I am proud to say that the set-up looks so much better than I envisioned and photographs look magnificent!

There are few minor things that I would like to add, but that’s the beauty of it… the set will change from time to time. Some things will be added and taken away, just to keep you all on your toes! =)

I wanted to do an interpretation of Shiva for a while. Thought of how I would position the model, what colors to use, and how I would edit. The idea was always on the back of my mind, but when I met with Alicia to discuss a shoot it just grabbed me. I knew Alicia would be able to pull off the look I imagined.
My husband edited the picture of four-handed goddess. We talked about the idea so much that all I had to do was to show him the files and he knew exactly what to do with them.

It was also a learning experience. There are few things I would do differently to ensure a better edit, but the idea came across beautifully.

I love doing what I do. I take pride in making women feel beautiful and sexy and bring out their “private” side. But there is so much more to it.

Photos we create are not just pieces of paper. These works of art are memories. Frozen moments of our existence. Markings of our milestones. They represent our beauty, our love, our passion…

When we think of a photo shoot we imagine getting ready, packing our outfits, and going over to a photo studio or a pre-determined location. Not often do we think of our own home as a stage where an intimate photo session can take place… but let’s think about it.

We spend so much time making our homes beautiful and comfortable . This is one place that is our true reflection and everything there is a personal touch. Just being at home relaxes and comforts us.

Having a boudoir photo session in your home is a very different experience. You know all the intimate details of this place and every room is full of memories. Presenting your man with photos that not only showcase your beauty, but whisper of familiar seduction can be very personal and intimate.

This week my make up artist Ashley and I traveled to Bellingham to Ms. K’s vocation home. It’s located in a quiet community on the edge of a lake where the trees are fully covered with moss making them look like they are made of plush. It’s so beautiful Ashley and I had to stop and take pictures.

Having access to a whole house made me feel like a kid in a candy store. Every corner has so much potential and my creativity was pumping! While Ashley was doing Ms.K’s makeup we got to talk about her vision for this shoot in more detail and collaborated on which “sets” we will use. Having a full access to her closet was great as well. When I looked through the windows at the back yard I could not help wanting to take some shots there. We did not plan to do that, but it was great that Ms. K could go straight into her closed and pull out an outfit that complimented my vision.

Another thing that was very interesting to me about this shoot is a reason behind it. Last year right after her birthday, Ms. K sat down and wrote 12 things that she wanted to accomplish or experience within a year. Boudoir session is a last thing on her list before her birthday at the end of the month. Wow, what a gift! She talked about other things on her list that she has done and it truly inspired me. How many times we want to do something, but put it on a back burner and tell ourselves we don’t have enough time? This New Year I am making a list and I am sticking to it!
